Leading Democratic fundraisers predict that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) will raise hundreds of millions of dollars over the next few months if he opts out of public financing and begins raising money for the general election.Specifically, they say Obama could raise $100 million in June and could attract 2.5 million to 3 million new donors to his campaign.
What is staggering is that this will go to the down ticket fights in all 50 states. Another thing, he can run the table on McCain in all 50 states, forcing the GOP to protect their strongholds, while they shake in their shoes.
These fundraisers say Obama could increase his fundraising dramatically because of three factors: a boost of enthusiasm among Obama donors following his clinching of the nomination; the migration of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) donors to his camp; and the mobilization of big Democratic donors who have given little so far this year.Record-breaking projections give Obama strong incentive to pass up $85 million in public funds that his opponent, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), has said he would accept.
Though political watchdog groups such as Democracy 21 have pressed Obama to accept government financing, he has resisted because the law would restrict him to spending only as much as McCain -- $85 million --between the end of August and Election Day. Democratic fundraisers say Obama could outspend McCain by a margin of 3 to 1, or more, if he skipped taxpayer-subsidized funding."One hundred million dollars this June -- it's definitely within reach," said Wade Randlett, who has raised more than $200,000 for Obama."
Randlett said Obama would not likely reach the awe-inspiring total if he limited himself to contributions that could only be spent before the August convention.
The race is one.
Congressman Jim Clyburn (D-SC) have given ample notice to the Clintons on their behavior throughout this primary season, but the RFK statement was the nail in their coffin.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said this is not going to the convention and she means it.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has declined to get in the middle of the nominating fight between Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, made both a prediction and a promise about the race on Wednesday.Mrs. Pelosi told the San Francisco Chronicle's editorial board that "a presidential nominee will emerge in the week after the final Democratic primaries on June 3, but she said `I will step in' if there is no resolution by late June regarding the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan, the two states that defied party rules by holding early primaries."
This is why we are witnessing all the crying and whining from Clinton surrogates on television. Saturday is 50%, Tuesday is the primaries, and Wednesday is the presumptive nominee, Barack Obama.
The Democrats are not going to go through the fight all summer and at a convention. They are already under funded for the convention in August and many pointing a finger to the extended primary season.
And the congresscritters? They need money to fight in November and how can they with an extended fight for the party top ticket nomination? This is over. And Clyburn?
Clyburn, the highest-ranking black in either house of Congress, is one of the most prominent uncommitted superdelegates to the Democratic convention. He said he will announce his endorsement at 11 a.m. Tuesday, when the last two primaries in Montana and South Dakota are under way.
We will be witnessing the power of the finale coming, starting on Tuesday.
